Mary Stoppert began her love of ethnographic art while on a sculpture sabbatical study in Guatemala in 1980. She returned in 1981. It was while traveling with Douglas Dawson on a buying trip for his gallery in 1984 that a partnership between them was hatched. Arte existed as a sibling of his gallery (Douglas Dawson Gallery) from 1984 and 1992. It was in August 1992 that Stoppert joined with Carmen M Perez and Arte became Stoppert Perez Ltd.

Carmen M Perez, a metalsmith and jeweler, shared a love of all things three-dimensional and Latin American with Stoppert. They began making frequent trips to study the cultures and purchase ethnographic items that they would bring home sell to pay for their own travel and collecting addictions.

It was on those trips in the 1990's that they began also collecting fine art. Friends and clients liked the art and wanted to purchase it. A second branch of Stoppert Perez was born.
